Some sunsets you just watch. But some sunsets, you actually feel. This one belongs to the second kind. At Junglaat, we have a small hike that we love the most. We call it the Sunset hike. It is not just a walk, it is a chance to slow down, breathe some fresh air, and spend a peaceful evening deep in the Himalayas. If you feel tired of the daily noise and rush, this hike is made for you.
The hike starts right from Junglaat. From the very first step, you enter a thick forest full of deodar, oak, and rhododendron trees. These trees are tall and old, standing close together, making a kind of green roof above your head. As you walk under this canopy, something nice happens. The noise of daily life slowly fades away. You stop hearing phone notifications or traffic sounds. Instead, you start hearing birds singing, leaves moving in the wind, and the soft smell of cedar wood fills the air. It feels like the forest is slowly welcoming you in.
One thing that makes this hike special is the monks. Deep inside the forest, you may come across monks sitting quietly. You do not need to disturb them, just seeing them there, so calm and still, reminds you how peaceful these mountains have been for hundreds of years. If this place touches your heart, you can always come back another day. Many people return just to sit alone and meditate, with nothing around them but the quiet of the forest.
After you pass the Flag Temple, the hike opens up into a hidden ridge, tucked away in the middle of the jungle, and this is where the real magic happens. On one side, you can see the sun slowly going down behind the mountains, painting the sky in orange and pink. On the other side, the wide Kangra Valley spreads out in front of you, and far away, the snow-covered peaks of the Dhauladhar range shine softly in the evening light. It is hard to find a spot where you get forest, valley, and mountains all together like this. Not many places give you all three at once.
But this hike is not only about reaching that one beautiful point. On the way, there is so much to notice, local trees, colourful flowers that change with the season, wild bushes, and many kinds of Himalayan birds that live in these woods. Every season shows a different side of the trail. In spring it looks one way, in autumn it feels completely different, and that is what makes this walk special, you can come back again and again and it will never feel the same twice.
As the evening comes closer, there is nothing left to do but sit down and watch. Watch the sky slowly change its colours, listen as the forest becomes quiet and settles down for the night, and just for a while, let yourself simply be. In that moment, there are no distractions. Just you, your thoughts, the stillness of the forest, and a sunset that gently reminds you how beautiful silence can truly be.
